How Was Chapel Rock Formed?

The high water of Lake Nipissing carved this Cambrian age sandstone about 3,800 years ago. Through thousands of years continual erosion, nature has created unique cliffs and caves along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Chapel Rock is one such treasure in this beautiful area. It has color, as well — from the warm orange hues concentrated at its base due to mineral deposits, to the lighter tan shades near the top, the rock appears to have a natural ombre.

Estimated at 250 years old, a lone white pine tree is perched on Chapel Rock. In the 1940s, an archway that connected the formation to the mainland collapsed — a reminder that Pictured Rocks is ever-changing. Now, the roots almost impossibly stretch out to get nourishment from the nearby forest’s soil. From a kayak, the tree appears as a solitary sentinel.
